Tomas MunitaTomás Munita is a very different photographer. Based in Santiago, Chile, Munita is a photojournalist who has won numerous awards and recently was profiled by The New York Times. His work takes him all over the world, and some of his most moving images come from the region near his South American home.

Where did you go to school for photography?
I studied photography four years, in Santiago.

What's the most important lesson you've learned either from a teacher or mentor?
To listen to myself when taking photos—my fears, my strengths, my obsessions.

What was your first photography job?
I was an assistant for an advertising photographer, but I lasted one session; then I started working for a newspaper.

What advice would you give to a photographer who is still in school?
Work a lot and put yourself into the situations where you want to photograph. Do it for yourself, do it for pleasure. Don't wait for the dream assignment. Do it by yourself—simple, cheap. And always respect your subjects.

What inspires you about photography?
The fact that it takes me out into the world.

What makes you go out and shoot?
Obsessions with color, light and stories.

What do you like best about the whole process?
Arriving back home.

What do you think it takes to be successful in today's challenging and competitive marketplace?
Sensibility.
