Sara RemingtonSara Remingtons photography shows an aesthetic thats at once graphic and simple and elegant. The San Francisco-based professional is making her mark as a top-rung food photographer who makes high art from the most mundane of subjects. Age: 27 Photo Education: Syracuse University; Cinematography Studies, FAMU, Czech Republic Who was your most inspiring photo instructor? Catherine Karnow, a photographer based in San Francisco who I worked with for a number of years. Why did you find her inspiring? There are many reasons, but the main one is her energy and drive. Ive never seen someone push themselves so incredibly hard while consistently shooting beautiful, smart and timeless images. She will always make me strive to be a better person, businesswoman and photographer. Whats your favorite photograph not taken by you? Self-Portrait at Thirteen by Francesca Woodman. Woodman shows amazing maturity and restraint in this image. Most of my inspiration comes from photographers who dont shoot the kind of still life or food that I do. What was your first big break? My first big editorial shoot nearly three years ago was for a magazine in Napa Valley, Californiaa seven-page article on farmers markets and chefs in the area. I ended up getting the cover, which really kick-started my career. What do you want to do with your photography? To bridge the gap between commercial and fine-art photography; to create something different with my food and still-life images. Its difficult to compose a still life that projects personality and a certain quietness or that doesnt fall flat. I strive to bring life to inanimate objects and evoke strong memories or emotions in the viewer and myself.
