Monday, September 1, 2008The Real Next Top ModelFinding the next supermodel is the result of diligent work and plenty of model tests. It’s about much more than just a TV show.Soon after my seventh or so year in fashion, I began to notice that my perspective of the world began to skew a bit. Perfectly normal, lovely people I met were subject to aesthetic scrutiny in my head as if they were being cast for a job. I tried to shake the critical voices, but when they persisted, I became convinced that I was destined to be a great discoverer of new modeling talent. |

Monday, September 1, 2008Hi-Tech Studio: The GreenroomCreating your own space within your studio benefits clients and art directors and provides a gallery to display your best workHaving your own studio space is a right of passage for many professional photographers, but when you reach this pinnacle of success in your career, creating a studio retreat or greenroom within your studio has benefits you might not have considered. Creating such a space has a threefold advantage. It offers clients who come to your shoot, but don’t necessarily want to be on the set, a high-tech room that still keeps them close to the action. |

Tuesday, June 24, 2008Naked In The Courtroom - The Web And CopyrightThe Internet has opened a can of worms for photographers struggling to keep control over images while also seeking to get their work seen by the public and image buyersHave you ever had one of those dreams where you're standing in the middle of a courtroom defending the copyright of one of your images when you look down and realize that you're naked? You will. There's an unprecedented number of copyright challenges facing photographers occurring on the Internet. Images are getting lifted from services like Flickr and photographers' websites at an alarming rate. The hijack-ers are using the images to illustrate blog entries and YouTube videos. The harsh reality for us shooters is that it may be perfectly legal. |

Monday, April 28, 2008Vision To Visuals: A Traditionalist's ViewGoing digital doesn't mean ditching your aestheticsMany of the artists and commercial clients who work with me often present me with fresh creative challenges, requiring the application of old technologies in new ways. More often than not, however, it's the discovery and application of new scanning and printing technologies that helps them communicate in ways they didn't think possible. In the end, though, I often remind myself that it has nothing to do with the technology. In the end, everything that I do stems from my simple love of and passion for the art of photography—converting motion into a frozen, static image in the hopes of creating a compelling visual record that proves to everyone that the experience was indeed real. |
