A Photo Trove, A Mounting Challenge

In some sense, the iconic photograph of Rosa Parks recreating her quiet act of rebellion on a bus in Montgomery, Ala., belongs to every American. But as a practical matter, it belongs to Bill Gates. Anyone wanting to use that image in a book or on a Website must first license it from Corbis, a corporation founded and owned by Mr. Gates, who is better known for starting Microsoft. The photo is among the 11 million prints and negatives in the legendary Bettmann archive, which Corbis bought in 1995.




Jenoptik Strengthens Camera Business

The Jenoptik Group has purchased the remaining 49 percent of the shares in SINAR AG, making it a 100 percent owned subsidiary of the technology group’s Laser & Optics division. The Board of Directors of SINAR AG approved the share acquisition on Thursday last week.




Panasonic LUMIX To Launch Digital Photo Academy

Panasonic LUMIX will launch the Digital Photo Academy, a series of workshops for all digital camera owners who want to maximize their cameras’ features and create more rewarding and enjoyable photo experiences.  The academy, offering courses at three different levels, will roll out in 20 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco, in May 2007.  Courses in each city will be taught by a local professional photographer, giving students ongoing access to photo experts and resources in their own community.

City May Seek Permit and Insurance for Many Kinds of Public Photography

Some tourists, amateur photographers, even would-be filmmakers hoping to make it big on YouTube could soon be forced to obtain a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance before taking pictures or filming on city property, including sidewalks. New rules being considered by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour to get a city permit and insurance.

The Hasselblad Masters Award 2007/2008

Olympus E-System Firmware Upgrades

One of the advantages of the 100% digital design of the E-series DSLR cameras from Olympus is that components can be updated (lenses, flashes and bodies) via a software connection to the Internet long after they’ve been purchased. After Protests, City Agrees to Rewrite Proposed Rules on Photography Permits

Responding to an outcry that included a passionate Internet campaign and a satiric rap video, city officials yesterday backed off proposed new rules that could have forced tourists taking snapshots in Times Square and filmmakers capturing that only-in-New-York street scene to obtain permits and $1 million in liability insurance.




First-Ever World Photography Biennial, Paris: October 30-November 25, 2007

June 6, 2007: Paris – This November, the Musée du Quai Branly will inaugurate Photoquai, the first biennial ever to be dedicated to the presentation of contemporary photography from Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Representing the geographic regions included in the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly, the photo festival will include more than 30 city-wide exhibitions in museums and cultural centers, in outdoor plazas, under bridges and along the banks of the Seine River.
