First Look: Canon EOS-1D Mark IV

Built for action, the newest camera in the EOS-1D line has built-in HD video and a maximum ISO above 100,000

Canon introduced the EOS-1D Mark III high-speed pro D-SLR some 2½ years ago, and that 10.1-megapixel, 10 fps camera quickly became a favorite with action pros for its shooting speed and with still others for its fine image quality. Now comes its eagerly awaited successor: the EOS-1D Mark IV, with 60% more pixels, HD video, ISOs to 102,400, an all-new AF system and more.

The EOS-1D Mark II was the first EOS to feature dual on-board DIGIC processors. The EOS-1D Mark IV sports a pair of DIGIC 4s, with approximately six times the processing power. This helps to give photographers the ability to shoot 14-bit, 16-megapixel images at 10 per second, plus HD video. The processors and an all-new Canon CMOS sensor make possible a normal ISO range of 100-12,800, with expansion all the way to 102,400 with its APS-H sensor.

The Mark IV also can shoot HD video at ISOs up to 102,400, opening a whole new world to users—not just video, not just HD video, but HD video in ambient light just about anywhere. Canon D-SLR video pioneer Vincent Laforet already has a quickly produced Mark IV video online, shot in city streets by ambient light at night, mostly at ISO 6400. Search for it: Nocturne Vincent Laforet.
