Sony SLT-A77: The Pro Powerhouse

The workhorse DSLR with a fixed translucent mirror is rugged and feature-rich—an excellent choice for pros who want a fast-shooting powerhouse

The Pro Powerhouse. That pretty well sums up the Sony SLT-A77. This remarkable DSLR has some of the most advanced technology and capabilities of any camera on the market. At its heart is the Sony Translucent Mirror, which gives the SLT-A77 unmatched shooting speed and AF capabilities. In this camera, professional photographers have a 24.3-megapixel sensor in a rugged body that's capable of shooting stills and full HD motion.

With TMT, a nonmoving translucent mirror transmits most of the light to the image sensor, while directing a portion of it to the phase-detection AF sensor. The camera maintains autofocus continuously. This is fundamentally different from most DSLRs, which have a moving mirror. The translucent mirror technology gives the SLT-A77 a speed advantage in terms of maximum shooting rate, and it gives you nonstop phase-detection AF, even for HD video.

24.3 MP APS-C Sensor
The SLT-A77 features the high-resolution 24.3-megapixel APS-C Sony Exmor HD CMOS sensor.

Bionz Image Processor
The powerful onboard Sony Bionz Image Processor allows for ISO ranges between 50 and 16,000, as well as the ability to record full HD video with 24p, 60p and 60i frame rates.

Eye-Level OLED Tru-Finder
The 2,359,296-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers the resolution, contrast and response that professionals require. You get eye-level viewing for still and HD shooting. The OLED finder can show you as much or as little shooting data as you want, and it gives you an accurate, real-time preview of the effects of your camera settings.

Sensor-Shift Stabilization
The SLT-A77 incorporates Sony's SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization. This technology moves the sensor rather than the lens elements to counter the effects of camera shake. The upshot is that every shot you take with the SLT-A77 has image stabilization, regardless of the lens you use. You can see the effects in real-time through the OLED viewfinder.

3-Way Tilting LCD Monitor
The 3.0-inch, 921,600-dot LCD monitor tilts and swivels for easy shooting at any angle. For a pro who's looking for a new angle or perspective, this LCD is a welcome camera feature.

AVCHD Progressive Video
Producing video for your clients has become a standard requirement over the last few years. The SLT-A77 uses the AVCHD Progressive v2.0 standard, and it can shoot 1920x1080 full HD video at 60p (as well as 24p and 60i), with continuous phase-detection AF. There's a built-in stereo microphone and built-in audio noise reduction. You can also attach an accessory microphone, if needed.

Up To 12 fps At Full Resolution
The SLT-A77 can shoot 24.3-megapixel images at up to 12 fps, with continuous phase-detection AF at ƒ/3.5 or greater, and it can shoot up to 8 fps at any aperture.

Pro-Level, Rugged, Weather-Resistant Body
A lot gets written about a professional photographer's need to have a rugged camera because we're notoriously hard on our gear. The SLT-A77 is a true workhorse built with a combination of magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy, stainless steel and engineered plastic. It's also weather- and dust-sealed, and the shutter is rated to 150,000 cycles.

Broad Lineup Of Sony A-Mount Lenses
Sony currently offers more than 30 A-mount lenses, from a 16mm ƒ/2.8 fisheye and 11-18mm superwide zoom to a 70-400mm telezoom. There are true macro lenses and the highly regarded Sony Carl Zeiss lenses like the Sony 24-70mm ƒ/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T Zoom and the Sony SAL135F18Z 135mm ƒ/1.8 Carl Zeiss Sonnar T Telephoto Lens among others. The SLT-A77 can use the full line of Sony A-mount lenses, as well as legacy Minolta Maxxum lenses.
