New Tools Of The Trade

This Article Features Photo Zoom

High-Performance Display
Give yourself plenty of room when working with images using the 24-inch widescreen MultiSync P241W from NEC Display Solutions. Features include 1920x1200 native resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio and LCD technology that minimizes color shift when viewing images from the widest angle possible. With the DisplaySync Pro system, you can work across two computers simultaneously with one keyboard and mouse, using the display to switch between computers. There are five programmable Picture Mode profiles for quick access to multiple color spaces, and connectivity options include DisplayPort, VGA, two DVI-D inputs and a USB hub. Estimated Street Price: $749; $1,249 (with SpectraViewII color-calibration system). Contact: NEC Display Solutions, (800) 632-4662, www.necdisplay.com.

Fast Access
If you're a photojournalist who's often racing from one assignment to the next, keep your DSLR in ready position using The Heralder series from Vanguard. The fast-action messenger bags have a Quick Top Access feature that lets you get the camera out quickly. Three sizes are available, with the smallest holding a DSLR, three to four lenses and a laptop, and the largest storing a couple of camera bodies, five to six lenses, a 15-inch laptop and a tripod. A detachable inner pouch lets you remove your gear and turn The Heralder into an everyday bag. Other features include a padded antislip shoulder strap for even weight distribution across your shoulders and a bunch of storage pockets. Estimated Street Price: $139 to $199. Contact: Vanguard, (800) 875-3322, www.vanguardworld.com.

Moderate Wide-Angle Optics
If you shoot more at the wide end than telephoto, the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2/25 is another option to consider adding to your camera bag. Available in Canon (ZE) and Nikon (ZF.2) mounts, the 25mm lens is constructed of 11 lens elements in 10 groups, and features a maximum aperture of ƒ/2 and an 81º diagonal angle of view. Both models include a CPU to provide aperture information to the camera, allowing the use of automatic exposure modes and the recording of EXIF data. Selected types of glass and two aspheric surfaces prevent color fringes from appearing on high-contrast edges. Estimated Street Price: $1,699. Contact: Carl Zeiss, www.zeiss.com/photo.

Film Looks
Photographers may not shoot with much film these days, but the look of it is something that probably will never go out of style. DxO FilmPack 3 lets you apply the grain, color, saturation and contrast of the most famous and classic film stocks such as Kodak Kodachrome and TRI-X, Polaroid 669 and Agfa APX 25. More than 60 film renditions are available with hundreds of possible combinations. The redesigned interface features a filmstrip that lets you easily navigate through all of the different looks. Ten film looks and 10 color filters were added, as well as hue, saturation and lightness sliders, and noise removal for more authentic-looking grain. Estimated Street Price: $129 (Expert). Contact: DxO Labs, www.dxo.com.

Smooth Move
The Cinevate Atlas FLT is a lightweight camera slider for HD video DSLRs that helps you make smooth horizontal, vertical and even-angled camera movements when shooting video. Measuring just 26 inches long and weighing less than 10 pounds, the camera slider features a nonreflective black satin anodized finish, full CNC aluminum and steel construction, and stainless-steel fasteners. The Cinevate Atlas FLT is equipped with a 3⁄8" screw, making it compatible with any standard 3⁄8" threaded ballhead. Estimated Street Price: Starts at $579. Contact: Cinevate, (807) 344-7153, www.cinevate.com.

Cable Support
The Zacuto Pincher is designed to prevent the HDMI cable to your DSLR from coming loose and to protect the port from damage. The Pincher attaches to a Zacuto DSLR Baseplate or Gorilla Plate with two Allen screws. Once it's attached, the cable is held in place with a fully adjustable rotating clamp. The Pincher functions with many DSLR models, including the Canon EOS 5D, 7D and Rebel T2i, as well as the Nikon D7000, D5100, D3100, D3 and more. Estimated Street Price: $130. Contact: Zacuto, (888) 294-FILM, www.zacuto.com.
