New Tools Of The Trade

Manfrotto 500 Video Head
Manfrotto has designed the 500 Video Head specifically for HDSLR cameras. The lightweight fluid head improves upon its support and balance system while maintaining a smooth, large range of motion. With a new "hallowed-out" structure using Manfrotto Bridging Technology, the 500 Video Head now has a broader top plate than the previous Manfrotto heads so it's more in line with the shape of a DSLR body. The top plate is also longer, allowing more varied center-of-gravity adjustment for DSLR zooms vs. prime lenses. The counterbalance is set to five pounds, but locking power on the tilt axis will keep the head stable under equipment weighing up to 11 pounds. Estimated Street Price: $169 (Flat Base); $179 (60mm Half Ball).

Buy & Sell In The Stock Market
Shutterstock just reached the milestone of one million licensable video clips in their royalty-free stock footage catalog, solidifying the website as a solid resource for both buying and selling stock footage for the freelance professional. Filmmakers needing extra footage for an edit are sure to find a clip to fill the gaps, as the expansive genres range from vintage 8mm film to action sports to celebrity footage. For those with a good eye for short motion clips interested in selling footage, Shutterstock is the perfect place to collect and sell those small projects. Shutterstock uses a simple licensing model and affordable pricing for stock footage based on video format and number of downloads. Contact: Shutterstock, footage.shutterstock.com.

Bust Dust
From covering world events to shooting kids' portraits, every time you take out your camera, you're exposing it to the inevitable dust, dirt and fingerprints. Lenspen has now bundled three of their cleaners together—the Original Lenspen for lenses, the FilterKlear for filters and the MicroPro for eyepieces—for the ultimate on-the-go Lenspen DSLR Pro Kit. Each pen has one end with a retractable natural brush for removing loose dust and the opposite cleaning pad end for removing fingerprints. The kit also includes a microfiber pouch that serves dual purpose for cleaning, as well as toting the three pens. Estimated Street Price: $34. Contact: Lenspen, www.lenspen.com.

Dual Shooter
For event or action photographers who often have two cameras strapped to their bodies, the Xit Group has created the Quick Release Dual Shoulder Camera Neck Strap to make toting around two cameras more comfortable and convenient. The strap is ergonomically designed to distribute weight evenly through the widening shoulder pads. The strap uses Velcro® and metal lock fasteners, allowing quick adjustment of strap length while standing up to rigorous usage. Included are two quick-release plates with ¼-inch threads for connecting the camera to a device with a ¼-inch screw. The strap can be divided into two separate camera straps for use individually. Estimated Street Price: $29. Contact: Xit Group, www.xit-group.com.

Complete Light Kit
Compact and lightweight, the Pro X Continuous Lighting Kit by Multiblitz is a complete kit for photographers who prefer continuous lighting. With 1000 W halogen tubes, the two tungsten lights provide 75 hours of 3200K light. Each light weighs 2.6 pounds and is 4.3x5.3x3.8 inches in dimension, making it easy to maneuver. The kit includes two lights, two light stands, two rotating four-flap barn doors and a padded soft case. Estimated Street Price: $849. Contact: Multiblitz, www.multiblitzusa.com.

Motion Made Easy
Filmmakers looking for a way to create a diverse range of motion with a portable device on a tight budget now can turn to the Carbon XL. This all-in-one system is a versatile set of carbon-fiber tubes and hardware that can be assembled into a camera crane, jib, dolly with track, car mount, motorized time-lapse track and more. The fact that Carbon XL utilizes carbon fiber means that it maintains strength and resists corrosion while being lighter than steel, aluminum and magnesium alloy. With the system weighing in at 50 pounds (excluding counterweights and cases), it's designed specifically for airline and remote location travel, allowing one person to pack, transport and set up. Estimated Street Price: $8,950-$14,950. Contact: Carbon XL, carbon-xl.com.
