New Tools Of The Trade

This Article Features Photo Zoom

Leaf Capture Remote For iPhone
For Leaf users, Capture Remote extends the workflow capabilities of Capture 11 by letting you view images remotely on an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch. The app allows you to view, zoom and pan high-resolution Leaf RAW images. Capture Remote is the first app to permit real-time, on-set remote viewing of medium-format images, so you can quickly check files on location when your laptop isn’t nearby. It’s free and available now for download from Apple’s iPhone App Store. To find it, search for “Leaf Capture.” You’ll also have to set up the Leaf Capture remote server, free for download from the Leaf website. Close-Up Lens
Boost your macro photography with the Pentax D FA Macro 100mm ƒ/2.8 WR lens. Like the company’s higher-end DSLRs, it’s weather-resistant and produces a life-sized reproduction ratio at its minimum working distance of just over five inches. The lens features a rounded diaphragm for beautiful natural bokeh at large apertures. SP coating repels dust, water and fingerprints, while a Quick-Shift focus system allows for manual focusing without leaving AF mode. The lens can be used on all Pentax DSLRs, digital and 35mm, but is optimized for the APS-C sensor. Estimated Street Price: $849. Contact: Pentax, (800) 877-0155, www.pentaximaging.com.

Aero Pack
Transport your gear in the Tamrac Aero 70, an ideal backpack for assignments that call for a minimal amount of gear. The bag holds a pro DSLR with grip and four-inch lens attached, an extra lens or two, a flash, accessories and personal extras. The foam-padded main compartment contains foam pillars that support the camera and dividers that protect your other gear. Double zipper pulls allow you to get to equipment quickly. Two lash tabs on the bottom allow you to carry a tripod. A zippered pocket inside the main compartment’s front flap organizes filters, memory cards and other accessories. Estimated Street Price: $79. Contact: Tamrac, (800) 662-0717, www.tamrac.com.

Online Photo Archive
Store your images with Swiss Picture Bank, a data storage system that allows you to archive images online with unlimited access. Each photo is archived at full resolution in four separate locations for redundancy. Images can be downloaded anytime. Improved features include a redesigned interface, sharing capabilities and a Desktop Uploader app that lets you drag and drop large volumes of pictures into your account at once. Estimated Street Price: $20 (1 GB); $90 (5 GB); $340 (20 GB); $1,600 (100 GB). Contact: Swiss Picture Bank, (877) 762-6292, www.swisspicturebank.com.

Wireless Flash
Optimized for Canon, the PocketWizard MiniTT1 Transmitter and FlexTT5 Transceiver allow you to wirelessly control single or multiple off-camera flash units. The radios interpret exposure data sent via the camera’s hot-shoe and digitally transmit it through a radio signal. This allows you to place TTL or manual flash units anywhere you need to. Remote E-TTL flash units are connected to dedicated FlexTT5 Transceivers for wireless TTL operation. The Version 5.0 firmware upgrade includes a new Automatic Camera Detection feature that allows the ControlTL system to automatically detect exactly which camera is being used for optimal performance. Estimated Street Price: $199 (MiniTT1); $219 (FlexTT5). Contact: PocketWizard, (914) 347-3300, www.pocketwizard.com.

RAW File Apps
With Capture One v5.0 DB and Leaf Capture 11, Mamiya shooters have more support for RAW files, as well as other helpful new capabilities. Capture One v5.0’s tools include Focus Mask, Skin Tone Enhancer, RGB Levels and Curves, Dust Spot Removal and other features for accelerating workflow. In addition to RAW file processing, Leaf Capture 11.2.9 offers 64-bit performance, enhanced image processing and speed, and enables remote shooting for Mamiya DM and DL series camera users. Both Capture One DB and Leaf Capture are free of charge. Contact: Mamiya, (914) 347-3300, www.mamiya.com.
