New Tools Of The Trade

This Article Features Photo Zoom

HD Video Adapter
For filling the equipment gap between still and video shooting, Really Right Stuff and Redrock Micro have teamed up to produce a clamp that adapts RRS quick-release clamps and plates for use with Redrock Micro support rigs and accessories. The microRRS adapts the RRS clamp for camera or lens mounting, and puts your HD DSLR at the correct height for use with other rail-mounted accessories, including mattebox, follow focus and more. The system also enables the use of the “L” bracket camera plates for vertical shooting. Estimated Street Price: $229. Contact: Redrock Micro, (888) 214-3903, www.redrockmicro.com.

High-Performance Filter
The Heliopan High Transmission SH-PMC circular polarizer maintains the same effect as the standard model, but loses less light with a filter factor of 2.0, instead of 2.5. This translates to a one-stop light loss. The SH-PMC coating allows 99.8% of light to pass through to the image plane, with the top layer repelling dust and moisture. Available in screw-in sizes of 46mm to 82mm in standard and slim brass mounts, the polarizer works without vignetting even when used with extreme wide-angle lenses. Estimated Street Price: $135 (77mm). Contact: Heliopan, (800) 735-4373, www.hpmarketingcorp.com.

Updated Lenses
The Sigma APO 120-300mm F/2.8 EX DG OS HSM and APO MACRO 150mm F/2.8 EX DG OS HSM now feature optical stabilization systems. Sigma lenses with OS technology allow you to use shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would be possible otherwise. These two lenses along with the 12-24mm F/4.5-5.6 II DG HSM are splash-proof, too, with protection from water and dust. The 12-24mm also includes new glass elements to compensate for color aberration and deliver high image quality. Estimated Street Price: $3,199 (120-300mm); $1,099 (150mm); $949 (12-24mm). Contact: Sigma, (800) 896-6858, www.sigmaphoto.com.

In The Cloud
If the flexibility of cloud-based storage sounds appealing, but not the idea of storing files on an outside host, CloudStor from Buffalo Technology provides a smart solution. The slim, network-attached storage device uses Pogoplug software for securely sharing files over the Web to any of your media devices. Files are always stored locally on CloudStor, and the online service is used only to connect you and those who you decide to share with to specified files on the drive. When you want to share with clients, simply email them a link. When you’re traveling on assignment with your laptop, the drive remains accessible as long as you have an Internet connection. Estimated Street Price: $169 (1 TB); $269 (2 TB). Contact: Buffalo Technology, (800) 456-9799, www.buffalotech.com.

Precise Pan-Tilt Heads
Position your camera exactly the way you want with the innovative Arca-Swiss d4 and d4m pan-tilt heads. The d4 can be controlled either manually or with micrometers while the d4m is manual only. Both models have a turning device at their base to align the camera, as well as a panning device under the camera mount for shooting panoramas. Under the panning device are two bubble levels that sit at a 90º angle for aligning the camera as well. The d4 and d4m weigh 1.7 and 1.4 pounds, respectively. Estimated Street Price: $1,102 (d4); $711 (d4m). Contact: Arca-Swiss International, P.O. Box 28450, Tempe, AZ 85285, (480) 755-3364, www.precisioncameraworks.com.

Classic Video Bag
Domke brings the timeless aesthetic of its camera bags to video. The Pro-V Jr series falls in line with the functional, classic look of a traditional Domke bag with a soft interior for protecting your camera and screen from scratches. The bags are made from water-repellant nylon. Memory foam at the bottom of the bag allows it to form to the shape of your camera for extra protection. In addition, there are small movable pieces of memory foam inside to add extra protection to sensitive areas of a DSLR or video camera. Movable inserts allow you to configure your equipment the way you want, and there are plenty of compartments and pockets for storage. Three sizes are available. Estimated Street Price: $139 to $209.
