Continuous Lights For Still & Video

As you explore the possibilities of shooting video with DSLRs to augment your still work, a different kind of lighting solution might be in order

This Article Features Photo Zoom

Litepanels 1x1 Standard
LEDZ Brute 9
As you can guess from the company name, LEDZ produces LED lighting systems. The Brute 9 is a compact (5.5x6.5x2.5-inch, 2.1-pound) unit featuring nine LEDs. Among the assets: 40,000-hour life, cool output, highest lumens/watts available for low power consumption from wall sockets, on-board dimmer, 5500K color temperature and interchangeable lenses that produce three beam angles with no need for barn doors. Litepanels MicroPro
The MicroPro is a very compact LED light that mounts right on the camera, providing luminous, soft, directional lighting. It’s flicker-free, shift-free and heat-free. Six AA batteries provide 1.5 hours of continuous operation; Energizer e2 lithium cells provide five to six hours. The 5.5x3.75x1.5-inch unit weighs just 10.5 ounces and outputs 5600K light; a filter for 3200K is included.

For more power and off-camera use, the Litepanels 1x1 is a one-foot-square LED light that draws just 40 watts, yet outputs the equivalent of 500 watts. It can be powered by AC or a variety of 18-18V DC sources, including camera batteries and car batteries. The 1x1 comes in a variety of models, including the Variable Flood/Spot and the SuperSpot (15° beam angle). Contact: Litepanels, (818) 752-7009, www.litepanels.com.

Continuous Flash
The Litepanels MicroPro Hybrid (www.litepanels.com) is the all-in-one lighting solution for video and still-image capture. Able to produce both continuous and flash lighting in a single fixture, the MicroPro Hybrid’s Continuous Mode utilizes low-energy LED output for constant, flicker-free, soft directional lighting that can be dimmed from 100% to zero with minimal color shift. The Flash Mode provides a 400% brighter burst than the Continuous Mode, ideal for freezing action when capturing still photos. An integrated filter holder on the face of the light works with three included color/diffusion gels, and additional filters can be stored on the back of the fixture. The light runs for up to 1.5 hours on AA batteries and up to six hours on Energizer e2 lithium cells, and optionally the unit can be powered through a 5-16V input jack on the rear. The MicroPro Hybrid weighs only 10.5 ounces.
