On Photography

What turns you on creatively?
Images in which the style and the content fight equally for my attention.

What turns you off creatively?
Being asked to identify a single style or subject matter that I photograph. I don’t want to be confined to a single style. I find that restrictive and boring.

What’s your dream photo assignment?
A week in the life of President Obama. Or a year of photographing people at work on all five continents. Of course, my family would travel with me.

If you could have dinner with an artist from any era, who would it be?
Leonardo da Vinci. The conversation would range from the Vatican to helicopters. I would ask questions, sit back and enjoy wherever his imagination led him.

What’s your favorite photograph not taken by you?
Today, it’s a photograph taken by my dad—a child at a parking lot with her arms outstretched and being pulled, quite literally, in opposite directions by her parents. It’s a fascinating moment and I identify with and feel for the child.

What profession other than photographer would you like to attempt?
Novelist. Like photography, it involves storytelling. Only as a novelist, nothing need actually exist and I would be able to make it all up.

What’s your favorite camera feature?
I shoot with the D3X, and it’s difficult to say what my single favorite feature is—there are so many features, large and small, that make it easy for me to think about composing photographs instead of working my camera. One feature that I still get a kick out of is the vertical controls—this allows me to change the camera’s perspective without losing even a fraction of control over the camera. It’s seamless, easy and truly a treat every time I use it.

What’s your favorite Nikon product, and how does it help you create better pictures or help you compete as a professional photographer?
My favorite product is easily the D3X. The 24.5-megapixel, full-frame sensor lets me take immaculate, large images using my favorite FX-series lenses. This, in turn, allows me to create the large-format wall art that many of my clients prefer. Every time I walk out with the D3X, I know I’m carrying the best in the industry. And that gives me the confidence to relax and do what I do best, which is to look through the viewfinder, forget about my equipment and find a photograph that excites me.
