Responding to an outcry that included a passionate Internet campaign and a satiric rap video, city officials yesterday backed off proposed new rules that could have forced tourists taking snapshots in Times Square and filmmakers capturing that only-in-New-York street scene to obtain permits and $1 million in liability insurance.

One of the advantages of the 100% digital design of the E-series DSLR cameras from Olympus is that components can be updated (lenses, flashes and bodies) via a software connection to the Internet long after they've been purchased. So, when better system performance is available via enhancements to firmware, users will be able to get more out of their Olympus E-System equipment. Olympus has announced firmware upgrades for the E-410 and E-510. Both updates can be easily applied by the end user via the Olympus Master Software which ships with the camera body, and an Internet connection.

In order to provide customers with enhanced customer support, Canon has developed a new Version 1.0.9 firmware for the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR camera. This firmware update incorporates the following improvements and fixes:

Improves the look of images when enlarged on the LCD monitor. Applies a slightly stronger sharpness setting to the LCD monitor when images are enlarged.

Some tourists, amateur photographers, even would-be filmmakers hoping to make it big on YouTube could soon be forced to obtain a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance before taking pictures or filming on city property, including sidewalks. New rules being considered by the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour to get a city permit and insurance.
