Klinko & Indrani: Masters Of Moving Forward
Markus Klinko and Indrani have branched out from their established roles of photographing celebrities and supermodels to making moving images and, not surprisingly, their latest project is a reality TV show that makes the photographers the stars
Figuring out their new roles in this new medium will be interesting. “I’m not certain that I will act as a DP,” says Klinko. “I don’t know if it interests me enough to be behind a video camera. What I enjoyed about being a still photographer was that there was an intimacy between me and the subject. One of the reasons why I got into photography was I loved to photograph beautiful women. There is a certain dynamic there that was personal, sexy, seductive, and I’m not sure if that same relationship can exist in the video world. I’m just not sure yet.”
Klinko doesn’t think he will ever stop shooting stills. “Maybe we will be shooting side by side, simultaneously,” he says, “me on a still camera, Indrani with video. Or we will be directing together. I don’t know. But I do know that we are open to all possibilities and experimentation to figure out what works best for us and for the client.”
A new reality TV show about the pair, Double Exposure, is set to air on Bravo. At press time, the schedule had not been announced. As Klinko says, “At this time, we can’t talk too much about the show because the network has laid out some restrictions, but we are really looking forward to it.”
When I ask them why they would make a good TV show, they pretty much agree on the answer. “We are a duo,” says Indrani, “and so everything we say, all the decisions that have to be made, are communicated and verbalized between us. There isn’t an inner dialogue going on as if it were one photographer calling the shots. All of our thoughts are spoken.”
Adds Klinko, “The dynamic between Indrani and me is very passionate. The female-versus-male perspective. An ex-couple working together. There has always been an interesting tension between us.”
Indrani agrees, “We both have our own very strong ideas. And a lot of the time, a discussion can become an argument, so there is definitely that added drama.”
With a laugh, Klinko concludes, “We’ve been told that we are a bit like a traveling circus, like a freak show. We’re quite funny, I guess. And people can blame us for a lot of things, but they can’t say that we are boring.”
