Markus Klinko & Indrani - Galactic Fashion
The collaborative team of Markus Klinko & Indrani does glamour and fashion with a special edge
Adaptability isn't something that Klinko and Indrani learned through photography. Markus Klinko began his professional life in a rather different field than photography. Born into a musical family, he became a concert harpist in Europe. He toured and had a recording contract, but just as his career was taking off, Klinko developed a strange ailment in his hands. Despite seeking top-drawer medical attention, the condition persisted and rendered him unable to play the harp.
While no one would wish such circumstances upon a person, the medical issue turned out to be something of a blessing. Klinko, for all of his talent, wasn't so enamored of the musical world. In fact, he found it boring and even tiresome. Shortly after resigning himself to the fact that his professional music career was at an end, Klinko shifted gears and decided to pursue photography for a living. With a considerable investment in gear, he set out to storm the visual world in the same manner in which he had taken the musical one.
First living in Paris, then moving to New York, Klinko began to get work and big-dollar jobs. His love of fashion and beauty set him inexorably on the course of fashion and celebrity photography. Fashion is an ever-changing environment, with new aesthetics and trends popping up all the time. Keeping up in such a dynamic field is challenging, to say the least. It takes a certain kind of creative type to get to the top and stay there, with ideas and concepts that are fresh and cutting edge.
Both Klinko and Indrani have experience being in front of the camera as well as behind it. When Klinko was touring the world as a harp virtuoso, he was photographed for publicity and album covers, and Indrani was an established model when the two met up. Their collective experiences as celebrities in front of the lens gives them a unique insight and ability to photograph celebrities like David Bowie, Beyoncé and Britney Spears.
In talking about the striking image of superstar Britney Spears that appears on the cover of this issue of Digital Photo Pro, Klinko says, “Britney Spears is a favorite subject of ours. As one of today's most influential pop stars and an icon of popular culture, she's always a pleasure to work with.”
Klinko and Indrani have an innate ability to communicate with their subjects, putting them at ease and making them collaborators in the process of creating the images. They don't so much pose their subjects as much as they discuss the look that will stun the viewers.
There's no doubt that the team of Klinko and Indrani are much more than the sum of their individual parts. Both individuals draw energy and vision from the other. Indrani, in addition to being a model and photographic collaborator, is a digital visionary. In their Manhattan home, there's a digital studio that can best be described as extensive. Frequently, the actual photo shoot can take a day, followed by weeks of post-production work in front of the computers. Those weeks are spent working the images into the look that the team conceived of at the beginning, as well as discussions and alterations done in collaboration with the client. Every detail is painstakingly addressed.
Indrani is the driving force while Klinko offers ideas and input. While Klinko tends to be focused on the beauty of the forms in the photographs, Indrani brings a different focus when she takes the reigns at the computer. She's more interested with bringing out the character of the subjects. It's almost as if Klinko sculpts the outer beauty while Indrani coaxes the inner beauty close to the surface. When you look at the photographs, you can't help but recognize that they display an almost indescribable multi-dimensional beauty.
As collaborative artists, Klinko and Indrani's work is of the very highest caliber. As a team, they achieve far beyond what each could do individually, and they continue to evolve in the fast-paced and often fickle world of fashion and celebrity photography.
