Markus Klinko and Indrani - Masters Of The Creative Partnership

For the team of Markus Klinko and Indrani, the world of fashion photography is their muse


klinko and indrani"We love fashion,” says Indrani, of the photo team Markus Klinko and Indrani. “We love beautiful things and appreciate the art that goes into fashion, so we do our best to find out what our clients' innermost personalities are.”

Achieving the best image for a fashion campaign requires research. “We discuss the fashion with our stylist who presents us with pictures from runway shows or Polaroids if they haven't been shown yet,” says Klinko, “and we get a sense of the clothing to assist us with the concept. Sometimes that process is reversed, so our concept becomes the launching pad for which clothes to showcase in an ad.”

“We want to truly express the strengths and unique qualities of a designer,” adds Indrani, “so we also try to articulate any elements of their styles that perhaps they don't realize are powerful.”

Klinko and Indrani also look to past photographers' work and ad campaigns. “We're very aware of images from older decades,” says Klinko. “We wouldn't reference something from six months ago or even five years ago, but the turn-of-the-century images from photographers like Man Ray and mid-20th century classic fashion icons like Helmut Newton have helped shape our ideas significantly.”

The pair has favorite models to shoot, but who they choose to use always depends on the desired outcome of the shoot. “It can be a very specific thing like the thickness of a model's hair that gets her the job,” says Klinko. “We also like to discover girls. One time I walked into a sushi bar and I saw this amazing-looking girl who worked there, so we brought her into one of our editorial projects and she ended up getting an ad campaign for Shiseido.”

Both say that it's wonderful being in their photographic partnership because there are so many challenges, especially on a fashion shoot where achieving a specific look and emotion is vital to the ad campaign, and dealing with those many challenges alone can be a huge pressure.
