The Foveon sensor in the Sigma SD1 is unique among DSLRs. Other manufacturers use monochrome CCD or CMOS chips that require color interpolation to build a final image. The SD1’s full-color 46-megapixel Foveon sensor captures all colors on every photosite. Red, green and blue color information is captured on each of the 15,000,000 pixel locations, which allows each pixel to provide both full luminance and chrominance information. This creates a more realistic and natural-looking image. The Foveon sensor is the only one made that can capture both luminance and chrominance information in this way. Other sensors have to reconstruct luminance information that's lost due to their bayer-pattern arrays. Sigma technology preserves color and contrast relationships in every image.
