Natural Skin Tones

You want all of the colors in your prints to be vibrant and lively. But the quality that separates the Epson Stylus® Photo R1900 from other color printers is the ability to reproduce beautiful skin tones. Why are beautiful skin tones so hard to achieve? The range of colors necessary to reveal the vitality and “life” in skin tones is gigantic. Without the right combination of hues, the results can be dull and unflattering.

Skin color doesn’t get painted on like clown’s makeup. There are subtle transitions between the tonal areas that are challenging even for the finest printers. The full richness of the image can be lost unless the printer is able to precisely apply the right colors in exactly the right amounts. The tiny dots of ink produced by the R1900 are so small that they’re measured in picoliters. A picoliter is one trillionth of a liter, and that’s imperceptibly small. The Epson R1900 creates droplets as small as 1.5 picoliter drops that are small enough to allow the soft and subtle shadings that characterize skin tone to be perfectly blended.

And experience plays a vital role, too. As human beings, we’re conditioned to expect skin to appear a certain way—perhaps our expectations are instinctual. Even the most stunning photograph of the most beautiful subject will be dismissed out of hand if the skin tones are muddied, have a color cast or are simply dull.

The Epson R1900 uses the 8-color Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss® 2 ink set, which produces rich, saturated colors and a superior glossy finish. The Enhanced Gloss Optimizer and Advanced Micro-Encapsulated inks create prints with a slick, wet and shiny look.

More importantly, skin tones really shine—figuratively, that is—because the special Orange ink provides greater vibrancy and permits beautiful color reproduction. And the reformulated Magenta and Yellow inks yield even richer blues with more intense greens. Auto-switching Photo and Matte Black inks deliver rich blacks on glossy and matte papers for prints with amazing contrast and depth.
