  • Description: I am a published, award winning amateur photographer. While living in a rural area north of Toronto I maintained a career as a professional graphic artist for print and digital media. However, photography increasingly became the more important art form that allowed me to explore creativity away from commerce. Inspired by nature I photographed the landscapes, changing seasons, flora and fauna. I saw beauty in everything from the muddied fields to the weathered fences and bore witness to man’s relationship with his environment. About two years ago circumstances forced me to move to the city. I embraced the change and quickly discovered that a similar beauty existed in my new environment. Surprisingly, the fantastic graphic offerings of the city seemed to largely be ignored by its inhabitants. In the country it was easy to appreciate the signs of spring, a wild animal sighting, life in a pond, or the shadows of spindly pines on the ground. Just as I had found in nature, beauty wasn’t confined to the ‘wow factor’ of the grand landscape. It was everywhere. I saw it in crushed cans on the street, spiraling staircases, in quirky doors, rippling shadows and manhole covers. I saw light and shadow, pattern and texture, form and colour, often in the unlikeliest of places. I began to collect remnants of these moments of urban serendipity in earnest. Heavily influenced by the more abstract works of the great urban photographer Otto Steiner, and with a casual nod to Andy Warhol for elevating the utilitarian to a higher level of art, I have brought my lens to bear on the urban landscape in which I now live. I have pondered how sad the city would be if it looked in a mirror and realized that the very marks created by man had caused it to lose its beauty. I don’t believe it has. I see beauty everywhere I go. I am passionate about it and I want to show it to the world. The city cries: ‘look at me, look and see!’.
