• Description: Marilyn Cook Artist’s Statement Art, for me, is a way to express my innermost thoughts and feelings. By putting these feelings down on paper or canvas, ideas can be conveyed to others about memories, dreams, and desires. Working with different media is a key part in understanding feelings and opening the mind to all possibilities. Clay, wire, paper, paint, beads, mosaics and pencils are but a few of the items that I have utilized to create my work. First, there is a need to think about how the piece will convey my feelings to the observer, when deciding on a specific work. I want others to ponder what has been made. Do others hear what the piece is “saying”, or feel sensations of grief or happiness when studying the colors or shapes of each item? Materials are usually selected by what my feelings are at the time of the pieces creation. Clay is usually chosen if I am happy, paper and pencil when feeling stressed, collage when unsure of myself, paint when feeling sad, or any other media that might embody what my soul is feeling when constructing my work. Most of my current works are drawings on paper. The use of a solid graphite pencil and white eraser allow me to put my feelings into a drawing or sketch. These tools elicit a wide array of effects and are forgiving in their ease of use. My work has grown from simple scribbles and doodles to elaborate representations from my own mind. I completely throw myself into my creations and most of my work is done while alone, so careful thought can be placed into the illustration or sculpture. Art has been a significant part of my life since childhood. My father was a talented and dedicated draftsman and my love of creating was nourished by him. There are no mistakes in the ability to create an amazing painting, drawing, sculpture or any other form of fine art, just the many different ideas that seem to stem from the very piece that is being created. I am excited to be doing something in my life that makes me happy and I look forward to sharing my work with others. Creating something with one’s own hands is an amazing gift that should be used, discovered, and employed by everyone.
