Description

I had the opportunity to make a trip out to the Dominican Republic a while back. As I was traveling I found a small and forgotten village called "The Bateyes". This tiny village has been inhabited by Haitians. The Bateyes is what Dominicans would consider to be the only safest place for Haitians to live. Dominicans and Haitians have an unspoken rivalry between the two. The Bateyes is considered to be the most uninhabitable village in all of Dominican Republic. Haitians are forced to live in houses made up of cardboard and scraps of rusted metal no bigger than a small walk-in closet. The Bateyes used to be a massive sugar cane field in the 1980's. The Haitians would work in the field for pennies an hour. Then one season it was all burned to the ground. Haitians had no where to go and villagers would have to find new ways to find food and shelter. They would then barter and develop skills that provided services to barely survive the every day necessities we sometimes take for granted in America like food, clean water, medicine, and hygiene. Till this day the Haitians struggle with health and shelter. If a rain storm comes, it claims countless lives and also washes many of the villagers homes away into the rushing rivers surrounding the village.
