The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens ($899) is another highly versatile new zoom lens for mirrorless camera users, this time for full-frame models with Sony’s E-Mount or L-mount cameras from Sigma, Leica, and Panasonic. The lens is based on Sigma’s existing 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens but by starting the focal length at 28mm it allows it to be significantly smaller and lighter than its predecessor without sacrificing image quality or performance. At just 16.6 ounces, it’s almost a pound lighter than the 24-70mm F2.8 Art lens and nearly an inch shorter and half an inch less in diameter. Despite the small size, which makes it ideal for travel photography, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens has high-end features, not the least of which is its fast constant aperture for low-light shooting and beautiful bokeh thanks to its nine-blade rounded aperture. The lens is made with 16 elements in a dozen groups, and has three aspherical lenses, two SLD lenses, and a pair of FLD lenses. It features Super Multi-Layer Coating, Nano Porous Coating and coating on the front element to repel water and oil and the lens mount is dust and splash-proof. Internally, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary uses a stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocus for both stills and video, and its compatible with AF-C for eye-detect AF and real-time tracking. All this performance in a small package makes it suited for a range of uses including wedding and event photography, portraits and family photos.
