Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II
If you’ve seen a theme develop with this story, yes, Sony released some killer lenses this year and three of our favorites made this list. Rounding off our picks for the best lenses of 2021, we have the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II ($2798), which not only features a popular zoom length, it also offers exceptional quality. Our colleagues at Imaging Resource, Digital Photo Pro‘s sister site, gave the lens a glowing review in October, and named it one of the best lenses of the year. “The 70-200mm F2.8 GM II is incredibly sharp across the entire image area at F2.8 throughout its entire zoom range, which is an impressive feat. The bokeh performance is also excellent. It’s staggering how good the image quality is,” Imaging Resource wrote. “Perhaps even more impressive is the gains Sony has made concerning autofocus performance. With four XD Linear Motors for autofocus, a first for Sony, the new 70-200mm GM II lens is lightning-quick. Often, it feels like the autofocus is instantaneous with pressing the shutter release, especially on the Sony A1.” Sony also subtly redesigned this “Mark II” version of the lens from the original and it’s appreciated. There are now improved controls including a dedicated aperture control ring and the GM II is over 15 ounces lighter than the previous version, which is a 29% weight reduction.
