The upcoming “Cuba Is” photography exhibit showcases work from an eclectic group of photographers, who provide an inside look at Cuba, from Havana and beyond. The exhibit runs September 9, 2017-March 4, 2018 at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.

On display will be the work—archival and on assignment—of featured photographers Elliott Erwitt, Tria Giovan, Raúl Cañibano and Leysis Quesada Vera. Additionally, the Annenberg Foundation produced an original documentary of these photographers at work, which will be part of the exhibit.

The list of exhibit photographers, who all have turned their lenses on Cuba, includes Michael Dweck, Claudia González, Alexis Rodríguez-Duarte and Tico Torres, Linet Sánchez, Michael Christopher Brown, Ernesto Oroza, Geandy Pavón, Orlando García, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, Khadis de la Rosa, René Peña and Luis Gispert.

Here are some additional details from the Annenberg Space for Photography: “Revealing complexities on—and off—the island, Cuba Is explores aspects of Cuba not easily accessed by foreigners—and sometimes not even by Cubans themselves. Over 120 photos feature subjects ranging from defiant youth known as “Los Frikis” to the hard-partying children of the 1%, the underground system of sharing digital content—“El paquete”—to Miami’s Chonga girls.”

To round out the exhibit, an immersive VR experience is designed to give viewers a first-person POV of Cuba’s vibrant music scene with a walk along the famous Malecón in Havana.

The Annenberg Space for Photography is located at 2000 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles, CA 90067. Exhibit hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is free.

A pre-opening event will be held September 8, 2017, 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and is open to the public, featuring Cuban cuisine, cocktails, music and more.
