For the 37th year, Leica Camera presents the competition for the prestigious Oskar Barnack Award, as well as the Leica Oskar Barnack Award Newcomer, which recognizes rising photographers under age 25. The contest calls for image submissions from professional photographers that reflect the interaction between people and their environments in “creative and ground-breaking styles.” The entry period is March 1-April 10, 2017.
Named for the inventor of the revolutionary, iconic 35mm camera, the “Ur-Leica,” the Oskar Barnack Award will honor the winning photographers with prizes holding a total cash value of €80,000 ($84,285):
- The Main Category winner will receive a cash prize of €25,000 ($26,339) and Leica M-System equipment (camera and lens) valued at an additional €10,000 ($10,535)
- The Newcomer Award winner will receive a cash prize of €10,000 ($10,535) and a Leica rangefinder camera and lens
- 10 additional submissions will receive prizes of €2,500 ($2,633) each
The photo competition will publish the finalists’ portfolios on the Leica Oskar Barnack Award website and in the magazine published for the competition. The winners and their works will be presented at a gala event held in Berlin.
