PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai is launching its fourth edition, to be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, September 8-10, 2017. The exhibition is an international celebration of contemporary photography, giving Asia Pacific buyers and collectors and the public access to artists never exhibited in China, to date. It’s also a space where the country’s most important art collectors display their private collections. Among this year’s featured artists include Chen Wei, Wolfgang Tillmans, Zhang Hai’er, Gohar Dashti, Lillian Bassman and Roman Signer.
The exhibition will showcase the work of international established and emerging photographers, as well as new Chinese photographers. Also on display will be the work of historically important photographers, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alexander Rodchenko and Marc Riboud.
China’s photography market is growing, and the exhibition is recognized as the region’s gateway to cutting-edge photography. Says Lu Xun, art collector and director of Sifang Art Museum, China, “PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai is the most important and prestigious gateway for collectors and enthusiasts in Asia to embrace this dynamic medium in art. Highly visual and conceptual, PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai is joined by the best international galleries and artists—going to the fair is a fantastic experience.”
Additional programs include “Staged,” an experimental platform for photographers who approach photography through installation art, video and performance. “Insights | A Colour Explosion” is a curated exhibition of museum-quality works for private sale. And “Conversations” focuses on the art of collecting and the role of private and public museums in developing the photography market in Asia Pacific.
PHOTOFAIRS will move to San Francisco for the second year, to be held at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion, January 26-28, 2018. Many of the photographers and galleries at PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai will be at the San Francisco exhibition. Applications are being accepted now.
